Tell Me, What Do You Hear?

As a church we’ve recently been looking at the person of Elijah.

Every Sunday for a number of weeks the subject has been upon the life and character of Elijah and how that can help us today.

We also follow this up in a mid-week small group setting where we review what has been shared on Sunday and pick it apart with a bit more depth.

One section in particular, 1 Kings 18:40-46 proved to be particularly beneficial and even reading it a few weeks later it is still bringing fresh fruit.

Take for example 1 Kings 18:41.

Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a rainstorm.

A very short sentence but it should be serving as a timely reminder of how God expects His people to operate. Here we have Elijah operating prophetically. He hears from God, he relates it to those around him and then it comes to pass. I expect that we may have read this section in the past and not recognised it for what it is – prophetic gifting in action. It should be an encouragement and a reminder for us all that the gift of prophecy and the role of the Prophet should still be operating for us as Christians. Not all are called to be prophets but we are all called to act prophetically. Paul exhorts us explicitly in 1 Corinthians 14:1 that we should seek spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.
